Is there popular culture?

Popular culture? Some may argue that popular culture is the likings and entertainment provided by the people. But is that really so? Since pop culture is the mainstream, we assume that figures like Lady Gaga and the addicting novels of Harry Potter are what the people like and choose to like. But mass media alters us to follow the mass media. Maybe there isn't really a popular culture, but rather a consumer culture.
